LA VISITA

This is a depiction of an unexpected moment of awe and magic I experienced at a dark time in my life. The desire to put the experience on paper has lived with me since March 2017, specifically a night in 2017 in which I polished off the last of an ex’s medicinal marijuana oatmeal cookies. At a decidedly unglamorous place in my apartment, I looked up into the darkness and saw this very flower glimmer and shine from the gloom, stars outlining its tens of thousands of petals. I couldn’t feel my body, all I felt was the fact that I was, and the star lotus seemed to tilt down its “face” and notice me. It spoke to me, words that confirmed my spiritual beliefs, consoled me in the pain of what felt like a huge loss at that time, and helped me understand none of us are alone, or separate from each other, but we are part of something so huge our minds can barely fathom or even tolerate. At that moment in conversation with what felt like the Cosmos, I felt minute and immense at the same time, and was hyperaware of how we’re just small organisms on a sentient space rock whirling through infinite, expanding space. And even that is a reductive take.
The star lotus makes appearances in my meditations here and there, always filling me with peace, power, and hope. I hope this piece finds a home in a tranquil and spacious place of reflection and brings those same feelings and connection to others. Six months of work well spent!
