Who am I, anyway?

Hiya. I’m Naomi, an Acquisitions Editor at a nature-centric Big 5 publisher. I started my professional career in customer-facing positions in which my linguistic skills came in quite handy, but worked my way from translator to proofreader, to editorial assistant, to writer, to where I am today, chasing good books that connect humanity to nature.

While my job has me developmentally edit manuscripts at most (because my focus is, well, acquiring,) I miss working magic on documents and stories, making sure ideas are conveyed as clearly as possible, and that the spelling and grammar is pristine while still respecting dialect and tone. I also love to read a good story, and have the stellar organizational skills and industry experience to make sure proposal packets and queries have the information you need to stand out to agents and publishers. So here I am, offering services for those brave souls who are seeking publication. Check out my Services page for more of that information, and if what I offer resonates, reach out via the form below (please no proposals). Give me 1-2 days to process your request and respond; I am on the spectrum and a lot of thinkin’ happens in this brain of mine (but imagine that brainpower being applied to your writing, eh?)

(disclaimer: this is my Acquisitions Editor Wishlist. For info on what material I’ll edit, proofread, or provide proposal package guidance for, please see my Services page.)

I’m quickly getting to know what books and projects make me want to give them my 100% and champion them for publication at the imprint at which I work. Submit a proposal at the imprint and address it to me if you’re writing adult non-fiction that talks to casual and amateur naturalists about any of the following:

  • Unusual creatures found in nature

  • Shameplants or other sensitive plants

  • Art-making that connects folks to nature OR gorgeous reflections on nature via art or writing

  • Esoteric practices that connect to nature

  • Fun beginner gardening

  • Sci-fi or fantasy-fiction-inspired gardening

  • Connection between wild animals and human scientists who endeavor to understand them

  • Nature and mental health

  • Fresh, accessible takes on astronomy

  • Meme animals

  • Human quests to protect our animals,

  • The Hawaiian practice of Kahu,

  • Ethnobotany,

  • Island nature,

  • Weird or unusual insects,

  • Fireflies!

  • and for the love of all that is fuzzy, quirky wildlife or quirky humans studying quirky nature!
